Checklist for Leadership

from Able Leader, November 2006

by Steve Kaye

Many of you will take time during the weeks ahead to reflect on your business, your world, and your life.

Here is a list of considerations to stir your thinking.

1) Leaders live forward

They look into the future. And the farther they see, the greater their impact.

They develop a vision for what they want to achieve, and they use this vision to guide their travel through time.

They spread hope by showing others how they can succeed within their vision.

They improve, refine, and extend their vision as they move closer to achieving it.

They imagine possibilities.

2) Leaders move with a purpose

They make decisions quickly based on the information available at the time. They know that procrastination is stagnation.

They take risks, knowing that risks can lead to mistakes. Then they learn from their mistakes, make corrections, and move on.

They set goals for achievements that serve as milestones along the way to their vision

They develop plans that show how to achieve their goals.

They accept reality, and then seek the best ways to deal with it.

3) Leaders think different

They ask themselves difficult questions and then answer these questions again and again and again until they understand all of the possible answers.

They think in terms of best, most, and greatest.

They reflect on life, purpose, and value.
They dream, wonder, and explore.

They write their thoughts so that they can be read, reviewed, and remembered.

4) Leaders serve others

They do what is best for the organization and the people in it.

They place other's success above their own.

They facilitate success in others, knowing that the more success they create, the more success will come back to them.

They take others into the future by letting them go first.

They relate to others, show empathy, and establish rapport.

5) Leaders do the right thing

They set an example of what others would hope to become.

They know themselves and use this knowledge to manage their strengths and weaknesses.

They seek out and promote the best in everything.

They tell the truth, even when it requires courage to do so.

They give without expecting to receive.

6) Leaders teach others

They show others how to succeed. They coach and mentor.

They set high expectations that cause growth in others.

They help others improve, even to the extent of creating performance that is superior to their own.

They model the skills and behavior that they expect from others.

They give permission to learn, experiment, and grow.

7) Leaders communicate

They give people the information that they need to understand the business, perform tasks, and improve performance.

They tell the story of their vision often because it inspire others to work for that vision.

They listen more than they talk.

They pay attention, knowing that respectful listening encourages others to tell more.

They ask questions to learn, test, explore, and guide.

8) Leaders treat others with respect

They arrive on time, because wasting another person's time wastes life.

They honor commitments, tell the truth, and use people's names.

They accept everyone as being important and special.

They attend to little courtesies such as returning phone calls and expressing thanks.

They resolve conflicts without causing damage.

Much success,
