How to celebrate your birthday

Here’s how to make your birthday especially memorable.

Decide to be four-years old.

Four is a good age. By then you are able to tie your shoes, use a fork, and count to four – all important life skills.

You also live in a world filled with curiosity, discovery, laughter, possibility, and wonder.

And most important, you know how to play.

Of course, if you have a job, you may be required to act like an adult for part of the day. [ We need to acknowledge this bit of reality. ]

But even then, you can bring your inner child to work. Maybe your child will find creative solutions to some pesky adult challenges.

Now, here’s the good part.

You can be curious, asking questions such as, “Why is that bird fluffed up?”

And you can discover an interesting butterfly, such as the California Sister. Wow! Just look at the colors.

Then you can laugh. Yes, you can laugh at anything and everything. [ Practice laughing now. Even a giggle will do. Notice how good that feels. ]

Next you can play with possibilities. What if everything was upside down? Or inside out? Or maybe backwards? Would that change the way people mowed lawns?

And through all of this you can wonder. Because now everything you find is something new. So it’s okay to let your imagination run loose.

Hey! Look a white butterfly just landed!

Now you can study it as if you were seeing it for the first time.

Notice the shape, the lines, the colors.

And you can wonder: What did it eat for breakfast? Where did it come from? Why does it have green eyes?

You could offer praise, such as, “Hello good butterfly! You’re doing a great job.”

Praise always feels good because you hear what you say. So sending praise to a butterfly is like giving praise to yourself.

And finally, here’s a bonus idea: What if every day was your birthday.

Then you could enjoy every day.

Would that be wonderful or would that be wonderful?
