What is Human Responsibility?

First, the concept of Human Responsibility is ancient.

You will find it in the wisdom of early indigenous people.

They knew their survival depended upon living responsibly, in cooperation with each other and with the Earth.

And then recently, the Pachamama Alliance started conducting programs about Human Responsibility. [ Find a link for the Pachamama Alliance below. ]

I like this concept because it embraces my values. And it leads to answers we need for a sane and sustainable future.

Our current belief in Human Supremacy has failed humanity.

Supremacy has been used to justify economic and social systems based on exploitation of land, people, and resources.

Since we live on a finite planet, such exploitation must stop.

Instead, we need to make choices based on Human Responsibility.

And that leads to simple actions, such as:

1) We can be mindful of how our choices affect the future of humanity.

2) We can apply this value in everything we do.

3) And we can talk about it with others.

Next we need answers to larger, more complex questions, such as:

1) How does Human Responsibility apply to our modern world?

2) How do we make this the fundamental, guiding value for all society?

3) And how do we make this the standard for measuring commendable behavior?

When we achieve this, the results will be environmental health, global peace, and social justice.

Of course, there is much more.

This blog post is just a beginning for us.

So I invite to you spend time thinking about Human Responsibility.

Then I welcome your ideas on how this touches you.

Much success,

Steve Kaye

Did You Know: The most effective way to help birds is to buy land.

Here are three organizations that excel at doing this.

1) American Bird Conservancy

2) The Nature Conservancy

3) The Trust for Public Land

Please visit their web sites to learn about the work they do.

And here’s an excellent book: The American Bird Conservancy Guide to Bird Conservation

I found this Pledge of Allegiance in Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. She articulated my shadowy thoughts so clearly that now I am a citizen of this planet and this pledge is more meaningful to me.
I pledge allegiance to the earth on which I stand,
and to the environment of which I am a part,
one planet in a Process, with soil, water and air like one body,
indivisible, with resources to be cherished and protected by all.

    Thanks Steve.

As you can see the book has had a profound impact on me. It holds out such hope for integrating native and western science in a way that does not diminish either but joins hands to raise our awareness of what is possible when we embrace the natural world as persons.
