How to Listen to Nature

Cloudless Sulphur, Female
Ancient peoples listened to Nature.
They did this because they knew Nature was as much a part of them as they were a part of Nature.
So they listened to gain guidance, solutions, and wisdom.
We can do this, too. Here’s how.
🌲 Choice
We begin by choosing to listen. And most important, we choose to listen completely, without doing anything else.
🌲 Gift
Next we give our selves to Nature. This includes giving our attention, our compassion, and our vulnerability. Combined, these show respect for the life talking to you.
🌲 Task
Now we work at being fully present. We seek to connect, to learn, and to understand. Through this, we join the voice speaking to us.
🌲 Role
When you listen, you become a partner striving to help Nature communicate. So you may ask gentle guiding questions. You may show gratitude for what you hear. And you may encourage with praise.
🌲 All
Real listening requires all of you. So you listen with your ears, with your eyes, and with your heart. Then you hear the entire message being sent.
🌲 Risk
Deep listening exposes you to new ideas. And those ideas can lead to changes. Yet, we know new ideas can make us better.
🌲 Sign
Your participation shows your values, your inner self, and your humanity. So Nature will know who you are from the way you listen.

Bougainvillea
Now, here’s an assignment: Visit with a tree, some flowers, a butterfly, or whoever is there.
Ask questions.
And then listen.
I did that today.
And Nature told me:
“Do your best in the season where you are.”
“Support those who help you.”
“Have the courage to bloom.”
And I said, “Thank you.”

By the way, these suggestions also apply when we are with people.
Much success,
