Give memorable gifts this year.

Many people give gifts to celebrate the holidays.

And yet some gifts end up neglected.

For example, have you ever seen a toddler who was more fascinated by the wrapping paper than by the toy?

So here is an invitation to give experiences.

Experiences last forever, never wear out, and become your legacy.

Consider:

🎁 Read Together

You may let the other person read to you. Or you may read to the other person. Or you may take turns reading.

Choose books with easy, inspiring content.

🎁 Play Together

Easy, possible games include catch (with a ball, a bean bag, or a soft toy), hide and go seek, peek-a-boo, or one that you invent.

You could also dance, sing, or make music.

If you choose a structured game with a child, relax and let them win. Or at least let them have a few victories. Because this is about showing how kind you are, instead of how good you are.

🎁 Explore Together

For example, you could visit a garden, a nature preserve, or a park. You could tour an art gallery, a historic site, or a museum. You could attend a concert, a performance, or a play.

Then use these as educational opportunities to talk about what you saw.

🎁 Work Together

Choose a project where you can both contribute.

For example, you could plant a garden, prepare a meal, or perform a chore.

In addition, every home has a list of projects waiting for attention. Now you have a partner who can help assemble, paint, or repair.

🎁 Be Together

Simply spend time together.

This can be quiet time when you just share space. It can be meal time when you eat together. Or it can be any time doing anything.

Although simple, spending time together shows you care.

Important Note: Choose the activity and the type of participation based on what the other person would be able to enjoy. Thus, consider ability, age, and interest.

And be open to possibilities.

For example, I have:

Played catch with someone in a hospital after they had a stroke (they could use their right hand).

Had a 9-year old help install a garage door opener.

Held hands with a dementia patient.

By the way, you can give memorable gifts any day throughout the year.

Enjoy.

Much success,

Steve Kaye

Did You Know?

The most effective way to help birds is to buy land.

Here are three organizations that excel at doing this.

1) American Bird Conservancy

2) The Nature Conservancy

3) The Trust for Public Land

Please visit their web sites to learn about the work they do.

Here’s an excellent book: The American Bird Conservancy Guide to Bird Conservation

That’s a great list. In mid-November, our younger granddaughter and our son flew out to California from Arkansas to visit us for an extended weekend. I directed and supervised our granddaughter (now almost 12 years of age) as she excitedly and proudly followed her great-grandmother’s (my mother’s) recipe for homemade pie crust and homemade pumpkin pie. The result was three beautiful and delicious pies, and I believe she will remember this experience always.
