Allen’s Hummingbird, Male, Taking a Bath on the Crest of a Waterfall

When I saw this hummingbird, I called out, “Hello small bird. How . . . .”

“Stop right there!” the bird snarled.

“What?”

“I’m not a small bird.”

“But . . . .”

“Even though I weigh 4 grams, I’m big inside.”

“How so?”

“I’m tough. Powerful. Courageous.”

Allen’s Hummingbird, Male, Hovering over a Waterfall (photo at low shutter speed)

“I can hover, fly backwards, and dive at speeds of 60 mph. Can you do that?”

“No. I have to walk.”

“Be careful when you assign a story to someone.

If you do, you might cause them to become that story.”

“So what do you want me to call you?”

“Call me a good bird. Because every bird is a good bird.”

“Okay. Hello, good bird. How are you doing?”

“Fine. As you can see, I just took a bath on this waterfall.

Now tell me, what’s your story?”

“I’m a force for good.”

“I like that.”

Of course, I’m an ordinary person. So I’m a small force . . . .”

“Stop right there!” the bird snarled.

“What?”

The story you give yourself must be a big story.

Otherwise you will become a small story.

So it’s impossible to be a small force for good. Just as it’s impossible to be a small bird.

Every force for good matters. Just as every bird matters.

And we need all of us, regardless of what we do.”

Much success,

Steve Kaye

Did You Know?

The most effective way to help birds is to buy land.

Here are three organizations that excel at doing this.

1) American Bird Conservancy

2) The Nature Conservancy

3) The Trust for Public Land

Please visit their web sites to learn about the work they do.

Here’s an excellent book: The American Bird Conservancy Guide to Bird Conservation
